Are You Drinking Enough Water? 7 Signs of Dehydration You Shouldn’t Ignore -Dr. Praveen MP
Dehydration occurs when your body loses more fluid than you take in. It can happen due to hot weather, exercise, fever, vomiting, diarrhoea, or simply not getting enough fluids.
Water and other fluids are essential for normal body functions. When your body loses more fluid than it takes in, dehydration can occur. It may happen during hot weather, after heavy physical activity, during fever, or with vomiting and diarrhoea.
Recognizing the early signs of dehydration can help you take appropriate action before fluid loss becomes more serious.
7 Signs of Dehydration:
1. Excessive Thirst
Feeling thirsty can be an early indication that your body needs more fluids. Persistent excessive thirst, however, can have causes other than dehydration and may need medical evaluation.
2. Dark Yellow Urine
Urine may become darker and more concentrated when you are not getting enough fluids. A change in urine color can therefore be one useful sign to pay attention to.
3. Tiredness or Weakness
Dehydration can be associated with tiredness, weakness and reduced energy.
4. Headache or Dizziness
Fluid loss may be associated with headaches and feeling dizzy or light-headed, particularly when standing up.
5. Dry Mouth and Lips
A dry mouth, lips or tongue can occur when the body does not have enough fluid.
6. Reduced Urination
Urinating less frequently than usual can be a sign of dehydration. Noticeably reduced urination, especially when accompanied by other symptoms, should not be ignored.
7. Fast Heartbeat
More significant dehydration can affect circulation and may be associated with a faster heart rate.
Who May Be More At Risk?
Dehydration can affect anyone, but babies, children and older adults can be particularly vulnerable. People may also need more fluids during hot weather, physical activity, fever, vomiting or diarrhoea.
When Should You Seek Medical Attention?
Seek prompt medical attention if dehydration symptoms become significant—for example, if you are very dizzy when standing, unusually tired or confused, have very little or no urine, cannot keep fluids down, or develop a fast heart rate or breathing difficulty.
Stay Hydrated and Pay Attention to Your Body
Drinking enough fluids throughout the day is an important part of maintaining normal body function. Individual fluid needs vary depending on factors such as age, activity, climate and health conditions.
If you frequently experience signs of dehydration or have an underlying medical condition, speak with a healthcare professional for personalized advice.
